A single man (on the road)
This weekend I saw two movies I wanted to see since I've read they were filming them. First was an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's chilling nightmare, The road. By coincidence, I finished reading the book exactly a year ago. I have to admit that even though the book adaptations normally cannot match the corresponding literary works, in this case the movie is actually quite well made and satisfying. The world is still bleak and barren, there is clearly no normal life ahead for the characters, yet the movie actually feels a little bit optimistic. Last year, after I finished the book, I was truly devastated.
Yesterday I went to see A single man, a directorial debut of Tom Ford, a former chief designer for Gucci. He adapted a 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood. Unfortunately, I haven't read the book so I cannot make any comparisons, but the movie really stands well by its own as a story of an aging gay man. George Falconer, a university professor, lost his partner of 16 years in a car accident. Colin Firth is so believable and real, it's heartbreaking. Julianne Moore as his longtime friend is also great. Jon Kortajarena, a Basque übermodel, plays a male prostitute and he is surprisingly good as well. Unfortunately, the young student that flirts with Falconer was not well chosen, IMHO. He is just too pretty. Overall though, this film is spectacular, the interior designs, the clothes, the changing colours during the time-course of the movie are perfect... well done.

Helvetica 3
A third post about the most stylish typeface in the world. One of my favourite exposition places in Madrid, La Arquería, which belongs to the Spanish Ministerio de Vivienda, is showing an exhibition about new technologies and materials for industry. The walls are decorated with these stunning posters:

PR S0602
The sixth season of Project Runway has started! It has moved from the mostly-gay-oriented Bravo network to the more Mom-at-home Lifetime channel and it shows. In the first (almost forgettable) episode, a conceptual designer was eliminated, something that would not happen while on Bravo. They were keeping these freaks around because they were so damn entertaining. Not on Lifetime. You are different = Auf wiedersehen! It has happened this week to the only Asian designer in the bunch. He came with this Eastern-philosophy-like bullshit about the chicken and eggs and dressed a pregnant woman like she was bearing an egg wrapped in Jesus-like rough linen. Oh, what a delusional idea, which, however, might have worked before but not now!
This season, the group of designers is extremely strong. Much stronger than I have seen in the last five (!) season and almost as strong as in the first Canadian PR. The winning look is here:
It's impeccable! Very well done Shirin!

minimummy
Walking home today, I have seen a mother and a child close to the Iglesia metro station. 'Oh, what a stylish white outfit the baby is wearing!' Coming closer to them, I've realized that the kid was wearing a mummy Halloween costume. The fashion sense is a bitch.

Gym
Marc Jacobs, a fashion designer who recently underwent a transformation from an ugly duckling into a Chelsea boy, comments the gym regimen for the GQ magazine: "The thing I love about the gym is not having to make choices. My trainer says, ‘You’re gonna lift this; you’re gonna do that ten times.’ Okay, great—just tell me what to do and I’ll do it. It’s the same thing with my nutritionist. All I have to do is follow instructions. I love that. This is not about ‘Would it be better in red or blue?’ There isn’t a lot of abstract, circular thinking involved. And it’s great. Those times are really nice for me." Hahaha! That guy simply tells the ugly truth! If you want to look great, you better erase your brain and stop the questioning.
